
| Shorten watches (radio watch--position check) | Close all unnecessary through-hull fittings (tapered plugs) | Secure ports and hatches | Clear decks | Inspect rig--running and standing | Have storm sails, sea anchors, drogues and warps "at the ready" | Check bilge pumps | Secure below decks | Check engine and battery | Prepare food ahead | Post or have in log "sail schedule" and vessel light diagram | Note lights ashore or on buoys that may be enroute of vessel's proposed course | If hurricane, understand safe vs. dangerous semi-circle | Keep crew as healthy, safe, warm and dry as possible with proper clothing, harnesses on deck and when cooking, bunk boards or leeclothes for off watch |
